What does Ruth 1:8 mean?

Naomi, facing the loss of her husband and sons, is releasing Ruth and Orpah from any obligation to stay with her. Rather than clinging to them out of her own need, she's blessing them and sending them back to their families where they might find security and new husbands. Her words recognize something beautiful: these young women have shown real kindness and loyalty during the darkest time, and Naomi wants God to repay that goodness to them. It's a moment of genuine selflessness from someone who has every reason to be bitter, and it opens the door for Ruth's choice to stay, which becomes the foundation of everything that follows in their story.
