What does Romans 5:20 mean?
Paul is making a startling claim here: the law, which we might think would help us avoid sin, actually ended up revealing just how much we struggle with it. When rules are clearly laid out, we become more aware of how often we break them, and sometimes the prohibition itself makes us want to do the forbidden thing even more. But the heart of this verse is the turning point in that second half. No matter how much our failures multiply or how deeply we feel trapped by them, God's grace is even bigger. It's not a close call, either, God's overwhelming generosity and forgiveness outpaces everything we've done wrong. For anyone feeling weighted down by guilt or convinced their mistakes are too many to overcome, Paul wants us to know that grace doesn't just match our sin, it absolutely exceeds it.
