Romans 13:9
“For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.””
What does Romans 13:9 mean?
Paul is telling us that all the rules and commands in Scripture actually point toward one thing: genuine love for the people around us. When you truly love your neighbor, you naturally won't hurt them, steal from them, or want what belongs to them. The specific commandments aren't arbitrary restrictions meant to control us, but rather expressions of what love looks like in action. If someone is struggling to follow all the rules of faith, this verse offers a compass: ask yourself whether your choices come from a heart that actually cares about others' wellbeing. That's the heart of everything God asks of us.
