What does Romans 10:19 mean?
Paul is wrestling here with a painful question: if God's message was so clear, why didn't Israel recognize Jesus as their Messiah? He quotes Moses to suggest that God actually *foresaw* this rejection and even predicted it, the idea being that Israel's jealousy when they see non-Jewish people embracing God's grace might eventually open their eyes. The quote comes from Deuteronomy, where Moses warned the Israelites that if they turned away from God, He would raise up a "foolish nation" to provoke their envy. Paul applies this ancient warning to his own time, arguing that God's plan has always included both Israel's temporary hardness of heart and the calling of the Gentiles.
