What does Revelation 3:7 mean?
The church in Philadelphia is receiving a message from Jesus, who describes himself here with titles that speak to his absolute authority and trustworthiness. When Jesus says he holds "the key of David," he's claiming the power and rightful authority of Israel's greatest king, meaning he has ultimate control over what matters most. His ability to open doors that no one can shut, and to close doors that no one can open, reassures this struggling community that their circumstances are not beyond his control, even when earthly powers seem overwhelming. This is especially comforting because Philadelphia was a small, vulnerable church with limited earthly influence. Jesus is essentially saying: "I see your weakness, but I want you to know who really holds the power." In hard times, when we feel powerless or uncertain, this reminds us that our deepest security rests not in what we can control, but in trusting someone whose authority is absolute and whose character is both holy and true.
