“If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, may God take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book.”
What does Revelation 22:19 mean?
John closes his prophecy with a serious warning: don't tamper with what he's written. He's not being arbitrary or controlling, but protecting something precious. The "tree of life" and "holy city" represent the hope of restoration and God's presence that runs through the entire vision, so removing someone from them means losing access to that hope and restoration forever. This warning reflects how ancient writers treated sacred texts, especially apocalyptic writings that people believed contained God's direct message. But the deeper point applies beyond John's time: when we distort or diminish God's word to suit our preferences, we distance ourselves from the transformation it offers. The stakes are real because God's word isn't just information—it's meant to guide us toward life itself.
