Psalms 95:8
“Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,”
What does Psalms 95:8 mean?
The psalmist is calling people to stay open to God rather than closing themselves off through stubborn refusal to trust him. Meribah and Massah were wilderness locations where the Israelites complained and questioned God during their journey out of Egypt, essentially testing whether God would come through for them. A hardened heart in this context means deciding in advance that God won't help you, so you stop listening or believing, which cuts you off from actually experiencing his care. The warning here is gentle but real: when life gets hard and uncertain, that's exactly when we're tempted to shut down and stop turning to God, and that's the moment the psalmist is asking us to resist.
