Psalms 89:12
“The north and the south, you have created them. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.”
What does Psalms 89:12 mean?
The psalmist is declaring that God's creative power extends over all directions and all of creation, from the farthest reaches of the compass to specific mountains the ancient Israelites knew well. Mount Tabor (in northern Israel) and Mount Hermon (on the northeastern border) are called upon to rejoice, as if the very geography of the promised land bears witness to God's greatness. It's a poetic way of saying that nothing in creation stands outside God's dominion, and that even the land itself responds with joy to who God is. For those in the psalmist's community and beyond, it's a reminder that God's authority isn't abstract or distant, but woven into the actual world they inhabited and could see with their own eyes.
