What does Psalms 51:12 mean?
King David wrote this after a painful season of sin and confession, asking God to bring back the deep happiness he once felt from knowing he was forgiven and loved. Joy in salvation isn't shallow cheerfulness, but a settled sense that you're right with God and your life matters to him. He's also asking for inner strength and resolve, a spirit that actually *wants* to follow God rather than just going through the motions. These two requests go together: when our connection with God feels distant or broken, we lose both our joy and our willingness to keep going. David is saying that restoring these things is God's work in us, not something we can manufacture on our own.
