What does Proverbs 17:5 mean?
When we mock someone in poverty, we're essentially rejecting the God who made them, since every person carries God's image regardless of their circumstances. The verse reminds us that our contempt for the struggling is actually contempt for their Creator, which matters deeply to God. The second part points out that taking pleasure in someone else's suffering doesn't go unnoticed either.
