What does Numbers 8:18 mean?

God set apart the entire tribe of Levi for service in the tabernacle and later the temple, rather than asking for the firstborn son from every Israelite family. This was a practical mercy, since requiring every family to give up their oldest child would have been devastating and created an impossible administrative situation. Instead, by dedicating one whole tribe to religious work, God got the dedicated service he needed while letting ordinary families stay intact. It's one of those Old Testament decisions that shows God thinking about the real weight his commands place on people's lives.
