Numbers 8:17
“For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are mine, both man and animal. On the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified them for myself.”
What does Numbers 8:17 mean?
God is explaining why He claims every firstborn child and animal in Israel as belonging to Him. This goes back to the final plague in Egypt, when God passed over the homes of the Israelites while taking the firstborn sons of Egypt, which secured Israel's freedom. Because God spared the Israelite firstborn that night, He considers them set apart, or sanctified, as His own. The practical result was that Israel's firstborn sons were dedicated to serve God in religious duties, though later this responsibility was transferred to the entire tribe of Levi instead. This verse reminds us that God sees redemption as creating a permanent bond, not just a moment of rescue. When we've been spared or saved from something, there's a real sense in which we belong to the One who saved us.
