Matthew 7:5
“You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
What does Matthew 7:5 mean?
Jesus uses exaggerated, almost comic language here to make a point that hits hard: we're often blind to our own serious faults while fixating on small ones in others. The "beam" and "speck" create a vivid image of that imbalance, the kind that makes you shake your head at the absurdity of it. He's not saying we should never help others improve or speak truth to them, but rather that we need to do honest inner work first. When we're aware of our own struggles and limitations, we become gentler, wiser, and actually more helpful to the people around us because we're not coming from a place of superiority. There's also grace here: Jesus assumes we will eventually see clearly and be able to help others, but only after we've looked at ourselves with real honesty.
