What does Matthew 7:4 mean?
Jesus is painting a vivid, almost humorous picture here: imagine trying to help someone get a tiny speck of dust out of their eye while a wooden beam sticks out of your own face. It's absurd, which is exactly the point. He's addressing our tendency to judge others for minor faults while overlooking our own serious ones, sometimes without even realizing it. This cuts to something painfully human. We notice when others are impatient, dishonest, or unkind, and we're quick to point it out. But we often don't see how impatient, dishonest, or unkind we can be. The image forces us to pause and ask: before I correct someone else, have I actually dealt with my own similar struggles? It's not that we can never help each other grow, but we do it with so much more wisdom and gentleness when we're honest about our own imperfections first.
