“Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.”
What does Matthew 7:17 mean?
A healthy tree naturally bears good fruit, and a sick tree naturally bears bad fruit, Jesus is saying, so it's foolish to expect anything different. He's using something his listeners knew from everyday life, a vineyard culture where you could identify an apple tree by its apples, not by what anyone claimed about it. The point isn't about being perfect, but about the direction of your life and what genuinely comes from your heart. When you're growing closer to God, kindness and honesty and generosity tend to overflow naturally, just like an apple tree can't help but produce apples. This is actually hopeful, because it means real change starts from the inside, not from straining to perform goodness on the surface.
