“By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?”
What does Matthew 7:16 mean?
Jesus is saying that the true character of a person becomes visible through their actions and the impact they have on others. You can't fake genuine spiritual maturity any more than you could somehow harvest sweet fruit from a prickly plant designed to produce nothing useful. This matters deeply when you're trying to figure out who to trust or follow. Someone might use impressive words or claim great authority, but if their life produces bitterness, harm, or selfishness, that reveals what's actually inside them. The question itself is almost playful in how obvious it makes the point: of course you don't find grapes on thorns. In the same way, you won't find genuine kindness, integrity, or love coming from someone whose heart is full of greed, cruelty, or dishonesty. If you're struggling to know whether to trust someone or something you've encountered, this verse invites you to look at the actual results in people's lives over time, not just what sounds good in the moment.
