What does Matthew 7:12 mean?
Jesus is distilling the entire heart of Scripture into one principle: treat others the way you'd want to be treated. This isn't just a nice idea—he's saying this one principle, lived out faithfully, captures what the whole Old Testament law and the prophets were really pointing toward. When you're uncertain how to act toward someone, you can ask yourself honestly: if I were in their position, what would I need or hope for? Then do that. It's a powerful simplifier for the complexity of human relationships, and it shifts ethics from following rules to genuine compassion.
