“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”
What does Matthew 7:11 mean?
Jesus is drawing a comparison between human parents and God, using something his listeners already knew to be true. Even people who are flawed and imperfect naturally want to give good things to their children when asked, so imagine how much more generous and eager God is to provide for those who come to him in prayer. The point isn't that we're hopelessly bad, but that if even imperfect love moves us to give good gifts, God's perfect love and abundance are infinitely greater. This verse offers real comfort when you're struggling to believe that God hears you or cares about your needs, reminding you that asking him for help isn't burdensome to him but aligns with his deepest nature.
