What does Matthew 5:46 mean?
Jesus is challenging us to think bigger about what love means. Loving people who are already kind to us is natural and easy—even people considered corrupt or selfish (like the tax collectors of his time) manage that much. He's pointing out that this comfortable, mutual affection isn't actually sacrificial or transformative; it's just human nature. The question invites us to consider what would actually set us apart, what would require real grace. It's not meant to make you feel guilty for loving your friends, but rather to gently ask whether your love stops there or reaches further—to people who haven't earned it, who might not return it, who might even oppose you. When we're willing to do that, we're reflecting something genuine and costly.
