What does Matthew 5:47 mean?
Jesus is challenging us to recognize that basic kindness toward people we already like isn't particularly remarkable or faithful. Tax collectors in that time were widely despised as collaborators with Rome, yet even they showed affection to their own circles. The point isn't that greeting friends is wrong, but that genuine Christian love goes further by extending warmth and respect to people outside our comfort zone—those who are different from us, difficult, or even hostile. This verse invites us to consider whether our kindness has real depth or simply reflects what comes naturally to everyone.
