Matthew 5:39
“But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
What does Matthew 5:39 mean?
Jesus is calling us to respond to personal insults and injuries with a radically different approach than our instinct would suggest. When someone hurts or humiliates you, the natural reaction is to defend yourself or strike back, but Jesus invites us instead to absorb that blow without retaliation. This doesn't mean staying in abusive situations or refusing to protect others who are vulnerable, but rather refusing to let injury breed more injury through revenge. The deeper point is about breaking cycles of harm through dignity and nonviolence. When you refuse to escalate, you interrupt the spiral that violence creates and leave room for something else to happen, whether that's the other person reconsidering their actions or simply you keeping your own soul intact. It's profoundly hard, which is why Jesus frames it as a choice we make rather than something that comes naturally.
