What does Matthew 5:38 mean?
Jesus is quoting the ancient law of retaliation that his listeners would have known from their scriptures. This principle originally existed to *limit* revenge, requiring punishment to match the harm done rather than escalate it. But by Jesus's time, people were using it to justify getting even with anyone who wronged them. Jesus brings this up to challenge the assumption that fairness means striking back when hurt.
