What does Matthew 5:40 mean?
Jesus is pushing us past what feels fair or safe into radical generosity. When someone takes you to court over your outer garment, he's saying to voluntarily give up your inner garment too, leaving yourself with almost nothing. He's not literally commanding you to become destitute, but to let go of the grip we naturally hold on what's ours and our need to "win" against someone who's wronging us. This fits into Jesus's whole teaching about not returning evil for evil. When you're being treated unjustly, your instinct is to fight back and protect yourself, but Jesus invites something different: a freedom that comes from refusing to let bitterness and self-protection run your life. Sometimes the most powerful response to someone taking from you is to offer more, because it breaks the cycle of retaliation and shows what actually matters to you.
