What does Matthew 5:23 mean?
When Jesus talks about remembering that your brother has something against you while you're at the altar, he's pointing to something that cuts right through religious practice: broken relationships matter more than rituals. The altar was the center of Jewish worship, the holiest place for making offerings, yet Jesus says pause everything if you've hurt someone. He's saying that carrying grudges or unresolved conflict into your worship is like trying to pray with your hands full of stones. The "anything against you" doesn't require you to be perfectly innocent either, it's about noticing when someone feels hurt by something you've done and caring enough to address it.
