“But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.”
What does Matthew 5:22 mean?
Jesus is teaching his followers that the internal attitude matters just as much as external actions. He's saying that harboring anger toward someone without good reason puts you in a serious spiritual condition, not just physically harming them or speaking harshly. The escalation in his examples (anger, then name-calling, then worse insults) shows how destructive these patterns can become. The specific insults he mentions were cutting words in his culture, designed to shame and diminish someone's worth. His point isn't that you'll be punished for having a single angry moment, but that cultivating contempt for others separates you from God's kingdom. He's inviting us to examine our hearts: Do we dismiss people? Do we nurse grudges? Do we look for reasons to think less of someone? These patterns reveal where our souls are headed.
