What does Matthew 26:74 mean?
Peter has just denied even knowing Jesus for the third time, and Matthew shows us how far he's gone in that moment: he's not just saying he doesn't know him anymore, he's cursing and swearing to make it convincing. It's a portrait of someone desperate to distance himself from danger, willing to use harsh language to drive the point home. The rooster's crow that follows is devastating precisely because Jesus had warned Peter it would happen, just hours earlier. In that sound, Peter would have heard the truth crash down on him: his brave promises to stand by Jesus had evaporated the instant real fear showed up.
