What does Matthew 26:54 mean?
When Jesus spoke these words in the garden of Gethsemane, he was facing arrest and the beginning of his suffering. He had just told Peter to put away his sword, and this statement explains why: everything that was about to happen, including his arrest and death, had been foretold in the Old Testament. Jesus understood his own path through the lens of God's purpose, which had been written centuries before. This reminds us that Jesus didn't stumble into suffering by accident or because events spun out of control. He walked toward the cross with eyes open, knowing it fulfilled God's redemptive plan.
