“In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me.”
What does Matthew 26:55 mean?
Jesus is pointing out the stark contrast between how the authorities are treating him now and how they could have approached him openly. For weeks he'd been teaching in the temple courtyard where crowds gathered, and they made no move to stop him then. Now they're coming at night with weapons and soldiers, treating him like a dangerous criminal who must be apprehended by force. There's both sadness and irony in his words. He's highlighting their hypocrisy, their fear, and perhaps their awareness that arresting him in broad daylight would cause a riot among his supporters. His calm question also shows his dignity in that moment, refusing to be intimidated even as his arrest unfolds. For us, it's a reminder that Jesus faced his final hours with clear eyes about what was happening and why.
