What does Matthew 25:44 mean?

In this moment from Jesus's teaching about the final judgment, people who neglected the suffering around them are asking for a chance to make things right, not realizing they've already failed the test. Jesus is showing that caring for people in genuine need isn't something you can postpone or excuse away—it's central to following him. The "hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, and sick" aren't abstract concepts but real people in front of us every day. What's striking is that these people seem genuinely surprised, which suggests we often miss opportunities to help simply because we weren't paying attention, or we convinced ourselves that someone else's hardship wasn't really our responsibility. Jesus teaches that it is.
