What does Matthew 25:43 mean?
Jesus is describing the moment when people stand before God and discover they failed to help others in their most vulnerable moments. He's not saying these people were actively cruel, but rather that they passed by opportunities to show care: they didn't welcome the lonely, didn't share clothing with those in need, didn't visit the sick and imprisoned. The striking thing here is that Jesus treats these oversights as serious spiritual failures. He's challenging a comfortable assumption that faith is mainly about internal belief or private practice. In his view, when we encounter real human suffering and do nothing, we're missing something central to what it means to follow him. If you're hearing this in a hard season, you might feel the weight of it, or perhaps you're someone who desperately needed help that didn't come. Either way, Jesus is inviting us to notice the vulnerable people around us and to ask ourselves honestly: where could I show up for someone today? The passage assumes we can do something, even if it feels small.
