What does Matthew 25:18 mean?
In this parable of the talents, a man receives one talent (a large sum of money) from his master before a long journey. Unlike the other servants who invest what they're given and earn returns, this servant is so afraid of losing the money that he buries it in the ground, the safest place he can think of. His choice comes from fear rather than faith, and it reveals his misunderstanding of what his master expects from him. This servant's response speaks to something we all face: the temptation to play it safe when we're afraid. Whether it's a gift, an opportunity, or a calling, fear can paralyze us into doing nothing at all. The parable gently asks whether the safest choice is really the wisest one, or whether sometimes trust requires us to risk something for a purpose larger than our own security.
