“and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’”
What does Matthew 23:30 mean?
These words capture something painfully human: our ability to judge people in the past while ignoring our own failures in the present. Jesus is pointing out the hypocrisy of religious leaders who condemned their ancestors for rejecting and killing the prophets, yet were doing the exact same thing to Jesus and his messengers right in front of them. It's easy to look back at history and think we would have done better, that we would have recognized truth and sided with the right people. But Jesus is asking us to be honest about ourselves now, in our own time. What injustice do we overlook? Whose voice do we dismiss? The hard invitation here is to stop comparing ourselves favorably to the past and start examining how we actually treat people who challenge us or make us uncomfortable today.
