What does Matthew 23:29 mean?

Jesus is calling out religious leaders who honored the prophets of the past while rejecting the prophets (and God's truth) standing right in front of them. They took pride in maintaining beautiful monuments to people they claimed to respect, yet they refused to listen to what those same prophets would have been saying in their own time. It's a gentle reminder that honoring faith from a distance, or celebrating people who challenged the status quo after they're long gone, is easy. The real test is whether we listen to uncomfortable truths when we hear them now, in our own lives. Jesus is pointing out that it's possible to look religious and respectful on the outside while actually resisting God's message on the inside.
