What does Matthew 23:28 mean?
Jesus is pointing out a painful reality about the religious leaders of his day: they've perfected the appearance of goodness without the heart to match it. They follow all the external rules perfectly, but inside they're driven by pride, greed, and the desire to control others rather than by genuine love for God or concern for people. This cuts at something we all face. It's possible to look put-together on the outside, say the right things, and maintain a good reputation while harboring very different motives underneath. Jesus isn't saying we need to perform constant emotional displays or confess every inner struggle publicly. Rather, he's inviting us toward integrity, where what we believe and desire internally gradually shapes who we actually are, not just who we appear to be. That kind of wholeness is both harder and far more freeing.
