Matthew 23:27
““Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.”
What does Matthew 23:27 mean?
Jesus is using a striking image here: a tomb painted white on the outside looks impressive and clean, but inside it holds only decay and death. He's saying the religious leaders of his time looked righteous and put-together on the surface, but their hearts were full of corruption, greed, and spiritual emptiness. They cared deeply about appearing holy while neglecting the actual work of becoming holy, and that gap between their image and their reality was the real problem. This is a tough saying, but it's ultimately an invitation: Jesus is calling out how easy it is for any of us to focus on what others see while ignoring what's actually happening inside. The good news is that he offers a different way—one where transformation happens from the inside out.
