What does Matthew 23:26 mean?
Jesus is using a vivid image here about the importance of inner transformation. He's pointing out that the Pharisees were obsessed with appearing righteous outwardly, keeping rules and maintaining a spotless reputation, while ignoring what was happening in their hearts. When you clean the inside of a cup thoroughly, the outside naturally reflects that care and attention. This speaks to something many of us recognize from our own lives: we can't fake genuine change by just managing our image. Real integrity, kindness, and faith have to start from the inside. Whatever we're genuinely cultivating in our hearts, our thoughts, and our intentions will eventually show up in how we treat others and move through the world.
