““Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.”
What does Matthew 23:13 mean?
Jesus is condemning religious leaders who prey on vulnerable people while maintaining a reputation for piety. The scribes and Pharisees were taking advantage of widows (among the poorest in that society) through legal or financial schemes, then covering their greed with displays of spiritual devotion like lengthy prayers. Jesus is saying that using faith as a mask for exploitation is particularly serious because it corrupts the very thing meant to heal and help people. The warning applies whenever anyone uses religion, authority, or respectability to harm others. Jesus isn't condemning prayer itself, but rather the gap between what we claim to believe and how we actually treat those who can't fight back. His words remind us that God sees through our public faces and cares deeply about justice for the vulnerable.
