Matthew 22:42
“saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.””
What does Matthew 22:42 mean?
Jesus asks the Pharisees a seemingly straightforward question, but it's actually a trap that will expose a contradiction in their understanding. They correctly answer that the Messiah (the Christ) should be a descendant of David, which was the expected teaching. But Jesus is about to show them (in the next verse) that David himself called the Messiah "Lord," which would be strange if the Messiah were merely David's descendant. This moment reveals how incomplete their grasp of who Jesus really was, even though they knew the scriptures. For us, it's a reminder that knowing the right answers about faith isn't enough if we miss the deeper truth about who Jesus is.
