What does Matthew 22:43 mean?

Jesus is asking his critics a question that cuts to the heart of who the Messiah actually is. He's pointing out something in the Psalms where King David himself addresses someone as "Lord," and he's asking how that makes sense if the Messiah is supposed to be David's descendant. The puzzle Jesus raises suggests that the Messiah isn't merely a future king in David's family line, but someone greater, someone David himself would recognize as his superior. It's a gentle but direct way of saying the religious leaders haven't understood the full picture of who the Messiah would be.
