What does Matthew 22:20 mean?
Jesus asks this question after someone tries to trap him with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. He's holding a coin and asking whose portrait and words are stamped on it. The answer, of course, is Caesar's, which sets up his famous reply about giving to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. The genius of this moment is that Jesus doesn't lecture or argue. Instead, he asks a simple question that leads people to answer themselves. When we recognize that the coin bears Caesar's image, we're forced to think about what bears God's image (spoiler: it's us), and that changes how we understand our obligations in the world.
