What does Matthew 22:19 mean?
When Jesus asked to see the coin used for taxes, his questioners handed him a denarius, a Roman silver coin that bore the image of Caesar. This simple request was part of Jesus's clever response to a trap set by religious leaders who wanted to catch him saying something they could use against him. By asking them whose face appeared on the coin they'd been using all along, Jesus highlighted an important truth: we benefit from living in society (using its money, its roads, its systems), so we have genuine obligations to it.
