What does Matthew 22:18 mean?
Jesus had just been asked a trap question about paying taxes to Caesar, designed to make him either offend the Roman authorities or alienate his Jewish listeners. He saw right through their game, recognizing that this wasn't genuine curiosity but a calculated attempt to catch him in a mistake. His response calls out something deeper than just a bad question: he names the split between their outward religious show and what's actually happening in their hearts. When Jesus calls them hypocrites here, he's not just being harsh, he's being honest about what he observes. They're testing him not to learn, but to trap him.
