What does Matthew 22:17 mean?
The religious leaders are testing Jesus with a trap question about Roman taxes. They're hoping he'll either anger the occupying government or lose credibility with Jewish people who resented paying taxes to a pagan empire. It's the kind of "gotcha" question designed to make him choose between two bad options, but Jesus refuses to take the bait and instead gives an answer that cuts deeper than either side expected (asking whose image is on the coin, then telling them to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's). The real lesson here is about where our true loyalty belongs, not about avoiding taxes.
