What does Matthew 22:21 mean?
When religious leaders tried to trap Jesus by asking whether Jews should pay taxes to Rome, he gave an answer that still puzzles and comforts people today. He's not saying that some parts of life belong entirely to government and other parts entirely to God, as if they're neatly divided. Instead, he's suggesting that we can honor our earthly responsibilities (paying taxes, following laws, contributing to society) while keeping our deepest loyalty and worship for God alone. The beauty of this answer is that it refuses a false choice. You don't have to pretend the government doesn't matter or abandon civic life to follow Jesus, nor do you have to let earthly powers claim your ultimate allegiance. Many people find this liberating when they're wrestling with how to live faithfully in a messy world where we're citizens of both an earthly community and God's kingdom.
