What does Matthew 21:8 mean?
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds that gathered wanted to honor him in the most meaningful ways they knew. Spreading their own garments on the ground and laying down freshly cut branches was how people in that culture showed reverence to someone they believed was truly significant, even royal. It's similar to rolling out a red carpet today, except these people were offering what they had: their clothes and the natural world around them. What makes this moment tender is that these were ordinary people, not officials or priests, spontaneously expressing their hope and welcome with their own hands and hearts.
