What does Matthew 21:9 mean?
On that first Palm Sunday, crowds pressed around Jesus as he entered Jerusalem, and their shouts weren't random cheering but deeply meaningful prayers. "Hosanna" literally means "save us," so they were calling out both a greeting and a desperate plea, recognizing in Jesus someone they believed could deliver them. The phrase "son of David" connected him to the promised king from Israel's ancient history, while "comes in the name of the Lord" echoed language from the psalms about God's messengers. What makes this moment both beautiful and tragic is that the same crowds shouting for his salvation would soon turn away, yet in this instant they glimpsed something true about who Jesus was—even if they didn't fully understand what kind of deliverance he came to bring.
