What does Matthew 19:24 mean?
Jesus uses extreme, almost absurd imagery here to make a point that would have startled his wealthy listeners: money can become a barrier between us and God. He's not saying rich people are automatically shut out of heaven, but rather that the attitudes often tied to wealth—self-reliance, attachment to security, unwillingness to let go—make it genuinely harder to open ourselves to God's kingdom. The disciples immediately ask "then who can be saved," sensing Jesus is talking about something deeper than just financial status. What matters is where our trust lies and what we're willing to surrender. A wealthy person who holds their possessions loosely and seeks God first can enter God's kingdom, while someone of modest means who clings to what little they have struggles with the same problem.
