What does Matthew 19:11 mean?

Jesus is responding to his disciples' shock at his teaching on divorce and remarriage. Rather than softening his stance, he acknowledges that living according to his high standards requires something beyond mere willpower, something that has to be given to you. He's not saying some people are incapable of understanding his words, but rather that truly living them out, especially in areas that challenge our deepest desires, requires God's grace working in us. This is honest and compassionate: Jesus doesn't pretend the Christian life is easy or that everyone will be called to the same sacrifices, but he also insists that what matters is possible through God's help, not our own determination alone.
