Matthew 19:12
“For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake. He who is able to receive it, let him receive it.””
What does Matthew 19:12 mean?
Jesus is speaking here about different reasons why some people remain unmarried or celibate. He acknowledges that some are born with conditions that prevent marriage, some have been forcibly made unable to marry through circumstances beyond their control, and some choose celibacy as a devoted commitment to God. Rather than declaring one path superior to all others, he's saying that different people are called to different lives, and whatever calling you have, embrace it fully. The phrase "he who is able to receive it" suggests this isn't about judgment—Jesus recognizes that celibacy for God's sake is a valid choice, but not everyone is called to it, and that's perfectly okay. Whether you're married, single, or celibate, what matters is whether you're faithfully living out what God has for you. There's room in God's kingdom for different life paths and different ways of serving.
