What does Matthew 19:10 mean?
The disciples have just heard Jesus teach that divorce and remarriage amounts to unfaithfulness. Their reaction shows they found this standard almost impossibly high, so they conclude that marriage itself might not be worth the risk or responsibility. It's a very human response when confronted with a challenging ideal: rather than rise to meet it, we sometimes wonder if we should opt out entirely. Jesus doesn't rebuke them for this thought. Instead, he acknowledges that not everyone is called to marriage, and some people—by circumstance or calling—will remain single. What matters isn't whether you marry, but whether you approach your commitments with integrity. If you do marry, you enter into something sacred that deserves your full faithfulness. If you don't, that's valid too. The point is that we're all invited to live with honesty and wholeness in whatever state we're in.
